The Biggest Mistakes Beginner Designers Make (And How to Avoid Them)By Samuel Claude

Starting out in graphic design can be super exciting, but let’s be real  it’s also really easy to mess up. As someone who’s still early in my design journey, I’ve definitely made a few classic beginner mistakes (and seen a lot of others make them too). The good news? They’re totally avoidable once you know what to look out for. So, if you're just getting into design, here are some of the biggest mistakes beginners make—and how to dodge them.

1. Using Too Many Fonts

One of the easiest ways to ruin a design is by using five different fonts just because they “look cool.”  A lot of new designers think more fonts means more style,  but it usually just makes the design look chaotic and hard to read.

How to avoid it:Stick to one or two fonts that complement each other. Clean and simple always wins.

2. Overloading the Design

It’s tempting to throw in tons of elements icons, colors, patterns, shapes all in one piece. But that just makes it hard for people to know what to focus on.

How to avoid it:Focus on the message. Ask yourself: What’s the main point of this design? Let that lead your layout.

3. Bad Alignment and Spacing

Even if everything else looks good, if your elements aren’t lined up properly or if there’s no breathing room, the design will feel off. This is something I didn’t notice until I really started paying attention to spacing.

How to avoid it:Use grids and guidelines. Most design software has them for a reason—use them!

4. Skipping the Basics

A lot of us want to jump straight into cool-looking projects, but without knowing design principles like hierarchy, contrast, and balance, things can fall apart quickly.

How to avoid it:Take some time to learn the foundation. Even watching a few videos on YouTube can help you understand how to make designs that actually work.

5. Avoiding Feedback

It can feel scary to share your work, especially when you’re new and not super confident in your skills yet. But design doesn’t live in a bubble it’s meant to be seen.

How to avoid it:Show your work to people you trust or post in beginner-friendly design communities. Feedback helps you grow way faster than working in silence.

Final Thoughts

Design is a learning process, and nobody starts out perfect. Making mistakes is part of getting better  what matters is that you reflect, improve, and stay open to learning. If you're just starting out like I am, keep practicing, stay curious, and don’t be afraid to mess up a little. That’s how growth happens.

Thanks for reading! If this helped you out or reminded you of one of your early design struggles, feel free to share it or drop a comment.

P.S. I’ve got a new blog dropping soon called "Top Free Resources Every Graphic Designer Should Know About" so if you’re ballin’ on a student budget (like me), you definitely don’t wanna miss that one.
